Sintra is the 2nd largest municipality in terms of population in Portugal and therefore often, messages are not conveyed to all citizens as intended. Although there are many campaigns, the municipality felt the need to create a space to help bridge the gap in promoting good practice. The solution was to launch a Museum of water and waste (MAR) which educates the local population on environmental awareness and scientific/technological dissemination in the context of the urban water and waste cycle. The benefit are that they can generate 1000m³ water from a mine which otherwise would be a high financial burden, an average of 1000 visitors a month who are influenced to change their habits regarding their handling of water and waste and other things.
